As someone with a medicine cabinet full of skin-care products touted as “Botox in a bottle,” facial massage tools, and LED masks galore, I think it’s safe to say I care about my money maker. When I hit 30 and started noticing wrinkles on my forehead and underneath my eyes, began to prioritize keeping my skin looking as youthful as possible for as long as possible. I’m game to try almost anything that comes across my desk, especially if it’s a treatment doled out by a professional.

When I heard about FaceGym, the company known for its face “workouts,” — which have a long list of celebrity fans, including Priyanka Chopra, among others — you could say my interest was piqued. FaceGym has locations in New York, California, London, France, and Sydney, and when I heard they were opening a new location in Santa Monica — just a few blocks from my house — I knew I had to test it out.

Keep reading to hear all about my experience at FaceGym trying its Signature Sculpt and Face Physio.

When I got to FaceGym, I was welcomed by the staff and brought into a large room that looked similar to a hair salon. After getting situated in one of the chairs, putting on a headband, and covering my chest with a towel, it was time to begin my workout. We started out with a “warm-up,” where the FaceGym “trainer” cleansed my skin, assessed it, and then stretched my facial muscles using a FaceGym ball.

From there, we moved into “cardio,” where the trainer used deep tissue muscle manipulation and percussion movements all over my face. She explained this was supposed to stimulate collagen production as well as help with lymphatic drainage.

I have pretty bad TMJ, so I asked if I could test out Face Physio, FaceGym’s intra-oral buccal massage technique. The goal was to relieve tension in my jaw and mid-face, and the trainer was able to do this by accessing both points of the muscle groups inside and outside of my mouth. After slipping on gloves, she inserted her thumbs into my mouth and proceeded to massage my face, cheeks, and jaw. (This portion of the session felt so relaxing that even re-watching the videos it makes me feel sleepy-eyed and calm.)

Once we were finished with Face Physio, the next step was “sculpting.” The trainer started out by using just her hands to contour and define my facial features, and then she moved on to using the FaceGym Pure Lift Facial Toning Device ($520). I’ve used plenty of facial toning devices in the past, but none of them have been as strong as what I experienced at FaceGym. The micro-current was so intense that some of my facial muscles were moving involuntarily. When the trainer compared the side of my face she had used the device on to the side she hadn’t, the difference was shocking.

No workout is complete without a proper “cool down,” which was the last and final step in my treatment. The trainer wrapped my face in a cool towel, and then we did one last flush of my lymphatic system using the FaceGym Multi-Sculpt High-Performance Contouring Tool ($66) on either side of my face.

At the end of my hour-long session, I left feeling not only relaxed but with less jaw tension and a face that looked a little slimmer. This is absolutely a treatment I plan on continuing.
